VAT Return Deadlines: A Practical Submission Checklist

Plan the return, payment and final confirmation as separate steps.

Check your actual deadline

Returns are commonly quarterly. The usual online filing and payment deadline is one calendar month plus seven days after the period ends. Your VAT online account shows the relevant dates; special schemes can differ. A nil liability does not remove the obligation to submit a return.

Build a preparation schedule

Set an internal close date earlier than the deadline. Reconcile sales, purchases and tax accounts, investigate missing documents, and obtain any review needed before submitting. A deadline reminder is less useful if the records are still incomplete on that day.

Treat payment as a separate action

Submitting the return is not proof that the payment has arrived. Allow for your payment method and confirm the amount and reference. The deadline still applies when it falls on a weekend or bank holiday. Check the official account rather than relying solely on a calendar calculation.

Keep the completion evidence

Save the submission receipt, a copy of the final figures, and payment confirmation. Record who reviewed and submitted the return. These items make later queries easier to resolve and help distinguish a filed return from a draft report in your bookkeeping software.
