How to use the VAT calculator

Choose Add VAT if your price excludes tax, or Remove VAT if your total already includes it. Enter the amount in pounds and select the rate. The three results separate the original net price, the VAT component and the final gross price. Start with a single transaction; use the invoice tool for lines with different rates.

Worked example: add VAT to £250

At an illustrative 20% rate, £250 × 0.20 = £50 VAT. Add that £50 to £250 to obtain a £300 customer total. To check the result in reverse, choose Remove VAT, enter £300 and keep the 20% rate. The net result returns to £250.

Formula and assumptions

VAT = net × rate ÷ 100. Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Monetary results are displayed to two decimal places. This tool handles a simple price split; it does not determine whether a sale qualifies for a relief or whether input tax is recoverable.

Which rate should I choose?

Use the rate that applies to the actual supply. A numerical result at 0% does not establish that an item is zero-rated, exempt or outside scope. Those are different tax treatments. Check the linked rate guide before preparing an invoice.

Move the rate slider to see how VAT changes a £100 net price.

01 / NET£100Before VAT
02 / VAT£20Added tax
03 / GROSS£120Customer pays

£100 + £20 VAT = £120 total

This slider explains the arithmetic. It does not determine the legal rate for your sale.
